Gophers Cuffed in Citrus Bowl
Well, all have to admit I have been a pretty big Jerry Kill booster and kind of a Mitch Leidner critic to start this blog. Those two items will be flip flopped today for good reason. First, Leidner looked better than he has all year throwing the football with his 21 of 31 effort for 265-plus yards in the 33-17 Citrus Bowl loss to Missouri. And no interceptions.
Kill, well, where shall I start. First, NEVER take three timeouts into a half. ALWAYS take a damn timeout when your defense is reeling, wheezing and tapping their helmets to come out as the other team marches down the field, grabbing chunks of yards at a time in an uptempo offense. For Christs sake, give our outsized and thin defensive line a freaking break, Jerry. You blew it before the half by not spelling our defense. Instead of regrouping and maybe making a stand, they got torched. Then you squandered 1:06 before the half, just trying to get off the field. Maybe we could have kicked a field goal, considering Liedner was hotter than a pistol throwing to multiple receivers. Use timeouts. That is what they are for. A rest. A regroup. Unforgiveable at our bowl game.
Second, maybe craft two or three trick plays and use in make our break situations. Statue of Liberty, fumblerooskie, hook and ladder, fake punt, kick, etc. Minnesota showed zero imagination and was outdone superbly by Missouri's fake punt and onside kick. Nod, Gary Pinkel. We used one against Ohio State and it failed. Didnt see another one this season....
Third, maybe install a no huddle offense and use it once in a while. Might come in handy when we need to go the distance in 1:06 or at the end of a tight game. Just saying. Why can every other college football team play uptempo, except Minnesota? Kind of lame. Minnesota is utterly predictable in everything we do. When teams are dead even, intangibles like what I am listing matter.
Finally, take some responsibility for your actions. ADMIT you blew the timeout thing. You also got out coached by Gary Pinkel. Admit it. With TCU coming to The Bank next August for our season opener, we will need an in shape defense, a decent rotation to defensive line, all cylinders running on offense and special teams greatness to have a chance to BE IN THE GAME. Otherwise, we'll get blown out. The Horned Frogs will be a Top 5 team nationally. So Gopher up, toss a couple tricks in the playbook, call your timeouts and be able to crankup the tempo and we will be a better team!
